Ophelia S/T |
![]() |
Ophelia marks new territory in the Triple Stamp catalog, the
direct result of collaboration between two label artists: David Shultz
and Jonathan Vassar. The strength of these two established songwriters
is the foundation that this impressive record is built upon. Recorded
at a river house in Ophelia, Virginia, a live, timeless sound is
captured. Perhaps a summer record at first listen, closer notice
reveals the chill of the Potomac River in wintertime just beneath the
surface. Grant Hunnicutt of Mermaid Skeletons and River City Band; and
Willis Thompson of Thao with The Get Down Stay Down lend their talents
to provide upright bass, slide guitar, piano, drums and
percussion--instrumentation that sits so naturally in the songs it
sounds like the quartet has been playing together for years.
New insights into the songwriters are found within the stark portraits
painted by Vassar's lyrics, and a quieter, impressionistic side of
Shultz. The record projects a sense of immediacy, poise and breeze.
Ophelia stands as a testament to the songwriting talent of Vassar and
Shultz, and the ability of four musicians to come together over a long
weekend and make an outstanding record.
